Real
We are not the fairy tale people
Living fairy tale lives
With fairy tale minds,
Perfectly pressed and wrinkle-free.
We have never owned or fit
In a glass slipper.
We have never dropped a house
On a witch.
We have never wished upon a star
With wooden eyes
Only to be guided
By a talking cricket.
We do not have cartoonish voices
With plastic smiles.
When we cry
It is real tears that are shed.
Love is not a story to us;
Love is life to us.
We are none of these thingsā¦because we are more.
We are real, and we are friends.
And for my part, I am for the richness of real -
An honest touch is worth more than a thousand pleasant fictions.
